Betsy McLean Plant A Row for the Hungry Garden

The Master Gardeners of York County in collaboration with Anne Springs Close (ASC) Greenway operate the Betsy McLean Plant A Row (PAR) for the Hungry garden. Master Gardeners support this teaching and growing garden in a number of ways. We assist volunteers, including Boy Scouts and students from the local area, who come to learn about gardening. We instill in them a passion for the healthful and gratifying benefits that they will realize from growing their own food. ASC Greenway assists these efforts with fundraising toward the purchase of soil and other garden supplies.

Since its inception some 20 years ago, this long-term venture provides another opportunity for Master Gardeners to give back to the community. Through our efforts we have donated annually a harvest of more than 3,000 pounds of produce grown at the garden to the Fort Mill Care Center food pantry and the Tega Cay Lutheran Church Community Cafe, which serves hot meals to the underserved.

Along with ASC Greenway we were privileged to accept the Governors Group Volunteer Award in 2021 for our many contributions to the PAR garden.
